1. Small producers, agriculture and community managed disaster risk reduction project.

This project targeted small holder farmers in disaster prone areas where the project looked preparing for disasters, preventative measures for disasters and mitigation measures. The target reached and worked with 5000 farmers and entrepreneurs.  2 road side market shelters constructed accommodating more than 60 business women and men, 20 civil protection committees formed, 3000 trees planted in bare land, 3400 fruits distributed and planted, 10 hectares of land planted with early maturing crops, 20 hectares under irrigation, 220 goats distributed to 110 households, 150 village savings and loan clubs formed and each had an average saving per cycle of MK560, 000. About 3000 meters of flooding rivers rehabilitated 2 fish ponds constructed and stocked with fish, 90 bee hives distributed and 30 households involved in bee keeping. 

2. Integrating simple water solutions and organic farming into disaster risk reduction programs.

The project targeted 3000 people including farmers, primary school teachers and pupils. The project looked empowering farmers, pupils and teachers on disaster risk management. The project also looked at providing safe drinking water through simple innovating ways, promotion of organic agriculture among the local farmers, promoting production and marketing   of different crops.

39 teachers and 1500 pupils trained on community managed disaster risk reduction, 2000 households trained on hygiene and sanitation, 750 households provided with safe drinking water, 130 local chickens provided to 13 households, 100 goats provided to 50 households, 3 tons of soya beans and sugar beans provided to approximately 500 households for the practicing organic farming. 500 households trained on organic farming.

3. Integrating village savings and loan associations with education for the underprivileged pupils in rural communities’ project.

The target for this project is 1300 pupils in junior primary schools and 300 households around those schools. The activities involves formation and empowering school committee, promotion of gender among community members, HIV/AIDS mainstreaming, building and rehabilitation of school blocks and teachers houses, construction of toilets, promotion of village banks among parents around the school, promotion of irrigation farming among parents, distribution of goats to parents, promotion of organic farming among parents around the school. 2 school blocks constructed, 80 goats distributed to 40 parents, 40 desks procured and being used by children, 4 toilets constructed and being used.

4.  Workshop on organic farming and analog forestry.

This was a workshop organized by SPRODETA to enable local NGOs in the northern region to promote organic farming and promotion of analog forestry. 13 local NGOs from northern region were involved. 30 members from local NGOs, 12 local leaders’ and15 farmers were trained on organic farming and analog forestry. At the moment more than 200 farmers are involved in organic farming.
